Boston's South End

In the mid 1800s, Boston's South End was built as a fashionably new residential neighborhood. By the early 1900s the area had a reputation as an immigrant neighborhood complete with boarding houses and street peddlers.
Beginning in the early 1960s, the South End became the largest and most successful urban renewal project in the United States. The neighborhood now contains the largest collection of intact Victorian style housing in America. The tree-lined, brick and cobblestone streets, with gas lamps and neatly arranged townhouses, radiate a distinctively European atmosphere and easily remind a visitor of a London or Paris neighborhood.

With recently restored townhouses, complete condominium conversions and painstaking renovations, the South End has returned to its turn-of-the-century splendor. Just over the line from the Prudential Center in Back Bay/Copley Square, the homes here have floor-to-ceiling windows, and massive archways inside and out that mark entrances and stairways. Jutting walls, overhanging rooms. balconies, and hidden backyards abound here. With all this development and restoration, the character of the neighborhood has not been lost. Unexpected little parks and age-old shops with original proprietors can still be found nestled in between the brick bowfronts.

The South End's unique urban neighborhood quality has attracted many creative and talented people as well as a mix of different ethnic, social, and professional types. Clearly the architectural character and high caliber of amenities found right next door or just minutes away in the adjacent financial, entertainment and shopping districts are compelling reasons why the South End is one of Boston's most exciting and desirable neighborhoods.
